Nothing is more bothersome than when you need to send an important message to a friend or colleague, and iMessage has decided to just stop working. Luckily, there are things that you can do to troubleshoot the problem and get iMessage to start working again as soon as possible.
Before we figure out how to fix iMessage when it's not working, though, we need to get to the root of the problem. What is causing iMessage to not work in the first place? It could be a number of random things, such as a bad internet connection, or simply settings that aren't set up correctly. Let's take a look at a few different ways to address these issues:
Tip 1 Delete Older Conversations
Before anything else, try deleting old conversions. The quickest way to do this all at once is by following these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Messages.
- Go where is says MESSAGE HISTORY.
- Tap on Keep Messages.
- Check 30 Days and this will automatically wipe out old messages sent or received 30 days ago.
Tip 2 Turn iMessage Off and Then Restart Your Device
This is a pretty standard troubleshooting staple, but that's because it works. Follow these steps:
- Go to Settings, then Messages, then turn iMessage off.
- Press the power button. A slider should appear; slide it to turn the power off.
- Once it is off, press the power button again to turn your device back on.
- Go to Settings again, then Messages, and turn iMessage on again.
Tip 3 Set Date & Time Automatically
For some reason, this works for some people. Set the date and time to automatically update by following these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to General.
- Go to Date & Time.
- Make sure that the Set Automatically setting is ON.
Tip 4 Check and Reset Your Network
Sometimes the problem isn't iMessage at all, but rather your Internet connection. In that case, make sure that you check your network connection by following these steps:
- Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, and make sure that your Wi-Fi is turned on and connected to a network. If not, then that might be the problem. If it is connected, move on to the next step.
- Turn off the Wi-Fi switch in Settings and reboot your iPhone.
- If the above still didn't work, then go to Settings, then Reset, and tap Reset Network Connections. Then you will have to input your entire network Wi-Fi passwords again, since it will delete all of your settings.
- If the above still didn't work, check the router that is sending out the Wi-Fi signal if you can.
Tip 5 Confirm That Your Phone Number Can Send and Receive iMessage
You can do this by following these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Messages.
- Go to Send & Receive.
- Make sure that you Apple ID is listed as the email there.
- Try unselecting your ID and using only your phone number.
- Try the reverse as well and unselect your phone number.
- Try selecting them both. Underneath, a new section that says, "Start New Conversation From" should appear. Fiddle around with the settings there, too.
- Try selecting just your phone number.
Tip 6 Update iOS to the Latest Version
- Follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to General.
- Go to Software Update.
- If there is an update available, tap on Download and Install.
Wait! Before You Do Anything, Back Up Your Data!
